By a happy coincidence I met an Austrian student, Teresa, who has studied on exchange in Sheparton. I had a chance to ask her about her experience in education both in Austria and Australia. Here is the summarised version but I will add more detail soon
- She loved Australia, the lifestyle and the people
- She thought the Australian education system was very good but that it was easier than the Austrian system.
- Austrian students spend more time at school
- She thought both systems would prepare people to get jobs but the Austrian system had better focus on core subjects.
- She loves the informal laid back lifestyle of Australia
- She said it is hard to get into some Uni programs in Austria, it is very competitive.
By the way, the happy coincidence for me meeting Teresa....
I had blisters from uncomfortable shoes (lots of walking) and I went into a Jack Wolfskin shop to buy some comfy walking boots. The Austrian shop assistant,Teresa, has this really cute half Austrian, half Aussie accent. When she heard our accents she was really excited to chat and ask why I was here. We spent a great half hour talking education, life and travel.
Teresa promised to be back in touch with more details soon, she has my business card and said that she will share an essay that she wrote comparing our education systems when she completed the exchange.
